The Shadow disappears finally when the sun creeps up and casts light through the blinds. 

Shortly after comes the alert, startling Vale awake.  

“Attention all drivers, staff, and guests. The presence of a shadow has been detected. Local law enforcement has alerted the Anomaly Bureau. Stay out of dark areas, carry a flashlight, and be vigilant. Beware of duplicate shadows. Repeat. The presence of a shadow has been detected. Local law enforcement has alerted the Anomaly Bureau. Marc stares at Vale, raising an eyebrow, mouth pressed into a thin line. 

Vale takes in the bags under his eyes and the hard set of his shoulders. He must have been awake all night. 

“I told you,” Marc finally says. Vale winces, deserving the clipped remark. 

“I’m-”

“Don’t say you’re sorry,” Marc says, voice steely. “You didn’t believe me.”

The pain on Marc’s face grips Vale’s heart. 

“I know,” Vale  says, squashing the urge to get defensive, to argue. He’s done more than enough arguing in the last twenty-four hours. “I’m sorry.”

Marc’s mouth is twisted into a bitter, angry line. Vale wants to soothe it but he doesn’t know how. He feels helpless in the face of Marc’s anger, but part of him feels relief. He hadn’t realized how exhausted and hollow Marc has looked the last few weeks, until he sees him now with the heat of anger in his eyes. 

“It was there,” Marc says, voice cracking. “It was there all night.”

He points up at the corner, and Vale is horrified to see Marc’s hands are shaking. He feels like vomiting, insides twisting in guilt and terror. 

“I watched it all night, and it stood there and watched me. It felt like days,” Marc says. “I told you, and you didn’t believe me.”

It’s the mirror of so many of their problems; Marc speaks, earnestly, and Vale assumes that he’s lying. He can’t find it in him to take the things that Marc says at face value, and Marc knows it. Vale thinks of the numb way Marc had spoken to him last night. Vale had told himself that he must have just been tired, but he knows now that it’s more than that.

Marc trusts Vale, and Vale can’t even believe Marc when he’s hurt. 

Vale has the urge to wrap Marc in his arms, but he stands on shaky legs first, heading to the windows and pulling the blinds open. The sun shines in through the windows, and he sees Marc shudder. 

He moves back to the bed and takes Marc gently into his arms. 

“I’m sorry,” he says again. 

Marc is shaking in his arms, face tucked into his neck. 

“You have to believe me,” Marc says. “I’m not a liar.”

It feels like a knife to Vale’s heart. He doesn’t think Marc is a liar; at least, he doesn’t think he thinks that. But when was the last time he believed Marc at his word?

Guilt chokes him. No amount of apologies will change what Marc has been through. 

He holds Marc in silence, breathing with him. He doesn’t know how long they sit there like that, but it’s long enough for Marc to finally fall asleep. 

Vale gently rests back against the pillows, keeping Marc pressed against him. He lays like that, thinking, until he hears a pounding on the door. 

He gently slips out from underneath Marc and pads to the door, flipping on lights as he goes.

There are two people in uniform standing there, and Vale lets them in without comment. They need to interview Marc, and Vale wakes him gently. They all settle in the living room, sitting awkwardly on the couch while the Investigators stand. 

Vale doesn’t have much to add to the conversation, but he spends the time holding Marc’s hand while Marc retells what he’s been through over the last few days. He feels like vomiting as Marc details how the Shadow has stalked him and how little sleep he’s gotten. It’s an exercise in guilt, and Vale has to sit with it literally and metaphorically as the Anomaly Bureau investigators talk with Marc. 

When they finally leave, Marc relaxes, clamoring onto Vale’s lap and pressing his face into Vale’s neck. 

“We should go back to sleep,” Vale says softly. “I’ll stay with you.”

They spend the rest of the day there in bed, and Marc is only awoken by the all clear announcement being sent out. 

“They sure work fast,” Vale observes quietly. “It’s contained.”

Marc yawns. The sun is beginning to set. 

“Don’t leave.”

“I won’t.”
